IV nutrition can be used to improve nutritional status that is often compromised by drugs used to treat cancer and the drugs used to treat side effects. IV nutrition is also very helpful if it becomes difficult to eat, or intestinal difficulties decrease nutrient absorption.
IV vitamin C is very useful in cancer treatment for several reasons:
It meets the increased requirements for vitamin C brought on by treatment.
It makes up deficits in vitamin C status caused by the cancer.
It invariably makes people feel better, improving quality of life
It may kill susceptible cancer cells by acting as a pro-drug leading to oxidative damage of the cancer cell, similar to how many chemotherapy drugs work. This theory is still under study.
